In contemporary times, one subject that is guaranteed to generate great deal of anxiety in Nigeria is the issue of unemployment. In addition, the global economic meltdown has virtually affected every commercial sector of the country, occasioning massive job losses, pay-cuts and consequently inefficient work delivery.

Not only does it appear that the government seems helpless in tackling this phenomenon, but also, the rate at which unemployed graduates and young professionals queue up in line to be engaged, are taking up a monumental twist. This is due to the exodus of young graduates that are churned out by our educational system on an annual basis.

However, two Nigerian based outfits, I-Work Ltd, in conjunction with an internet content company, Blogme Nigeria Ltd, are determined to confront and overwhelm these challenges by developing an innovative and first of its kind indigenous technology that would enable employers and employees to maximize their chances of interacting effectively through what they termed as the “Career Video Portal”. What this new product offers is a departure from the conventional ways of presenting professional curriculum vitae’s through hard and soft copies formats.

This new portal affords employers of labour to watch and access the profile, personalities and charisma of prospective employees through a short video presentation platform via the web. The short video presentation enables employees to briefly introduce themselves to a would-be employer before experiencing the real life interview session.

Nigerians are still weighed down by the burden of using pirated software products especially computer and mobile phones antivirus. Important documents, including valuable contacts are lost when systems crash under attack of viruses but this problem will soon be confined to the dustbin of history.

The Director General of National Information Technology Development Agency, NITDA, Prof. Cleopas Angaye, who gave the indication, hinted that the Agency is seeking collaboration with some foreign IT organizations that will set up firms to develop original antivirus software in the country.
Also in this interview, he spoke on the need to enact the cyber crime law, the agency’s vision for 2009 and several burning issues in the sector.

Plan
We will facilitate skilful and effective development programmes in information technology. My vision is to have monthly special focus on issues of access, development, connectivity, communication in information technology. We will look at various projects, those related closely to development standards and guidelines on information technology. We will actually press more on Nigerian content policy and also look at issues on IT security in public service, software and hard ware standards and guidelines for public and private IT facilities and provide guidelines for establishment of IT parks in the country. The IT Parks will be part of what the Ministry of Science Technology is doing in Science parks.
