Former first lady, Maryam Babangida, is alive contrary to online reports that she may have passed on or is in the throes of death. Anxiety had enveloped Minna, the Niger State capital and spread across the country as the rumoured death of Mrs. Babangida in a United States hospital filtered out. Nigerian money scams have become the oldest trick on the internet, but it appears the scammers are no longer just targeting your pocketbook, they're also after your heart.

US Postal Inspectors arrested 16 people and seized millions of dollars in Nigeria in a widespread con targeting Internet dating sites.

And several South Floridians may have been duped by the cold-hearted hustlers.

The scammers target members of dating sites like match.com, setting up fake profiles with fake photos. In one case, a South Florida man received an e-mail from a woman named Jean Hillson, including a photo and bio.  The man and Hillson established a cyberspace relationship, even though Hillson is stuck in Nigeria.

$(document).ready(function(){ $('#jqm_wrp_2') .jqDrag('.jqDrag') .jqm({ trigger: '#veTrigger_2', ajax: 'http://www.nbcmiami.com/i/dispatcher/?command=LoadVideo&id=55365452&seq=2&refsec=/news/local-beat', target: '#jqm_cont_2', overlay: 0, onShow: function(h) {h.w.css('opacity',1).fadeIn("fast");}, onHide: function(h) {h.w.fadeOut("fast",function() { if(h.o) h.o.remove(); }); } }); });

Scammers Target Internet Daters

Before long Hillson was asking the man for money to get back to Florida, $2,200 and they can be together. "Honey, I am having problems getting back home," reads one e-mail. "Hi baby, how soon can you have it sent?" reads another.

Hillson doesn't exist of course, but by the time that's established, the vulnerable mark is out a couple grand.

South Floridian Annette Scardina nearly fell into the trap.

In contemporary times, one subject that is guaranteed to generate great deal of anxiety in Nigeria is the issue of unemployment. In addition, the global economic meltdown has virtually affected every commercial sector of the country, occasioning massive job losses, pay-cuts and consequently inefficient work delivery.

Not only does it appear that the government seems helpless in tackling this phenomenon, but also, the rate at which unemployed graduates and young professionals queue up in line to be engaged, are taking up a monumental twist. This is due to the exodus of young graduates that are churned out by our educational system on an annual basis.

However, two Nigerian based outfits, I-Work Ltd, in conjunction with an internet content company, Blogme Nigeria Ltd, are determined to confront and overwhelm these challenges by developing an innovative and first of its kind indigenous technology that would enable employers and employees to maximize their chances of interacting effectively through what they termed as the “Career Video Portal”. What this new product offers is a departure from the conventional ways of presenting professional curriculum vitae’s through hard and soft copies formats.

This new portal affords employers of labour to watch and access the profile, personalities and charisma of prospective employees through a short video presentation platform via the web. The short video presentation enables employees to briefly introduce themselves to a would-be employer before experiencing the real life interview session.
